Stunning Custard Orchid, one of our West Australian Sun Orchids, scientifically known as Thelymitra villosa.  Orchids in this genus typically close up at night time and open with the sun and warmth, hence the name Sun Orchids.  The scientific name is more interesting, Thelymitra is latin derived from 'thelys' meaning belonging to women and 'mitra' meaning headdress or turban, combined meaning women's hood and referring in a somewhat erotic way to the structure of the flower. Anyway, back to Custard!  Obviously called the Custard Orchid because of the color. I am a from an era where Mum made custard using Nurses brand custard powder, a distinct flavor and delicious desert especially combined with tinned peaches!!  I recently went North to help a friend cook for a team of 12 men and 1 lady working for Wajarri Corporation in the Murchison.  It is remote, dinner is cooked on the fire and is simple and delicious.  We cooked cakes or scones for desert in camp ovens, simple and delicious.  One of the Men put in a request for custard, made with Nurses Custard Powder.  Sadly we didn't have any and the nearest Nurses Custard Powder was probably over 300klms away.  Like anything you want but can't have, the intensity of the craving increases. Custard became a constant topic of discussion, morning and night and by the end of the swing I think Trevor was considering calling a helicopter to drop some in!! Funny memory that came back to me while I was photographing these beautiful flowers!
