The stunning Scarlet Banksia scientifically known as Banksia coccinea.  Latin word coccineus means of scarlet color or dyed scarlet.  It is a word I am familiar with as I used to grow Blood Lilies scientifically known as Haemanthus (blood in Greek) coccineus (scarlet in latin).  The meaning very appropriate when you see the blood red flowers.  I have got my hands on a whole lot tube stock Banksias, all different species to revegetate a section of denuded land near the shack on the new place but as yet I haven’t found any of these beauties! I was lucky to see the Scarlet Banksias in flower on my last trip.  Most of the small trees were in bud but a few had flowers in different stages.  A fascinating symetrical structure and a stunning color! So beautiful to see these trees loaded with buds for the next flowering! I am hoping next time I head South these guys will be in full flower and fingers crossed I may even see a Honey Possum feeding on the nectar.
