Close contact with a wild creature is always humbling.  When I am in the desert I usually get up long before dawn.  I love seeing the light change and having time to find a hide, usually near a windmill.  This mill had one trough but also a leak from the tank which made a shallow pool.  Between the trough and the pool was a barb wire fence.  Experience has taught me that if I go to the same spot and sit quietly for several days, birds and other creatures realise you are not a threat and go about their normal behaviour.  This was the first time I had visited this mill so I knew the wild ones would sense my presence and be wary.  If I sat near the trough they would drink at the pool and if I sat near the pool they would drink at the trough.  I needed a spot where I could photograph both.  I found it, under a prickly Curara bush, lying awkwardly on my stomach in the shadow of the tank.  Ground littered with doublegee prickles and literally in the middle of a meat ant highway!! I was feeling  enthusiastic so ignored these obstacles and quietened my energy.  Birds started flying in.  After a while I sensed something, a shift in behaviour and energy, birds flew, while others looked to the distance.  Movement at the edge of the clearing.  A wild dog or cat?  A shape emerged and I realised it was a Kangaroo.  He knew I was there but slowly came closer and drank from the pool.  I stayed very still focused on keeping my energy quiet and calm.  An old wise kangaroo, strong and wily but also thin and weathered, as if he had seen a lot and managed survive the ravages of the desert. Somehow very privileged to have met him!!
